Ran Hu, MSW, MA, is a doctoral student at the University of Toronto, Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work. Her research interests include violence against women, stigma and help seeking, simulation-based teaching & assessment in social work education, and program evaluation. Prior to pursuing her doctoral studies, Ran worked with a diverse array of clients and communities, mainly including individuals infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS in Beijing and Detroit, internal migrant workers and their children in several major cities in China, women and sexual minority groups involved in different sectors in the commercial sex industry in both Beijing and New York City. Her most recent social work practice was with an anti-trafficking social service provider based in New York City, serving as a clinical staff in counseling and court advocacy, and later as a program manager in project development and outcomes evaluation from 2012 to 2017.
Ran earned her M.S.W. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, M.A. in International Crime & Justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY), and Bachelor’s in Social Work from Nanjing University in China.
